The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center

Implements Innovative RFID Solution to Enhance

Patient Experience and Increase EfficiencyIn February 2010, Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California expanded its facilities to include abrand new outpatient cancer treatment center. Already the largest hospital in the San Fernando Valley, the MedicalCenter’s addition of the four -floor, 55,000-square-foot building broadened its on-site services even further. The Cancer Center now houses the most advanced cancer treatment equipment to date and offers an entire range of cancer therapies in a single location. This state-of-the-art building is named The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center after the main source of its funding.

Roy E. Disney, the nephew of Walt Disney, passed away from stomach cancer at the age of 79.Years earlier, he and his family donated a generous $10 million to Providence Medical Center and, along with donations from surrounding businesses and organizations, raised the $36 million necessary for completion of the cancer center. The major goal of the new center was to heal mind, body and spirit simultaneously, incorporating the healing power of nature and Roy’s love for the ocean. The center also wanted to keep a personal feel throughout the facility so patients would feel relaxed and at home. In order to accomplish this, a comprehensive RFID system was installed with the idea that just by entering a room, a patient’s music, lighting and temperature preferences could be adjusted immediately and automatically.

  The Solution

To be successful, the RFID system needed to support the integration of multiple vendors’ products as well as gain approval from several project stakeholders. Vendors were reviewed over an eight-month period and the field was narrowed down. Authorities from all sectors of the center such as managers, biomed engineers and clinicians then collaborated with field experts to ensure the system met all the needs of the facility. The resulting one-of-a-kind RFID enabled system integrates products and solutions from many leading organizations, meeting the project’s original goals of creating an ambient experience that lets the patient take back control and allowing the center to deliver various integrative medicine treatments.

Upon arrival at the treatment center, RFID-enabled patient identification badges are read by two ThingMagic Astra® RFID Readers positioned above the entrance. Except for an ID number, these otherwise unmarked tags hang from lanyards around each patient’s neck, serving as a link to his or her billing, pharmaceutical, scheduling and doctor information. In addition, tags also hold patient atmosphere preferences. These preferences include a selection from six music choices, three color choices, various nature scenes and a specific desired temperature. Once identified by the RFID readers, a concierge is immediately able to greet the patient and direct them to their next appointment.

An additional 32 Astra RFID readers are installed throughout the facility, positioned on ceilings for maximum area coverage and prepared to immediately detect a patient when he or she has entered a treatment room. The patient identification data captured by the RFID readers is sent to a Reva Systems Tag Acquisition Processor (TAP) which aggregates the RFID Tag ID and location information and sends it to an AeroScout MobileView visibility platform where hospital staff can track patient location in real time. From here the data is distributed to a Connexall SOA Gateway and onwards to a sophisticated security and room control system where patient movement and pre-selected room configurations are processed to immediately change the lighting, music, temperature, video displays and other environmental conditions to cater to the patient’s individual tastes. Patient location data is also distributed from MobileView through the Connexall platform for message and alert distribution to Avaya VOIP servers, phones and IP browser display to facilitate ongoing patient contact.

  The Results

The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center assessment and development took about two years to complete. From there, four months of technology testing was launched until the facility was ready to open in February of 2010. Since then the center has been treating people from all over the world, making cancer treatment a little more tolerable. “I walked through these doors and I swear it was like angels singing. I’m not a really spiritual person, but this is so beautiful the way it puts you at ease by diverting your mind from your treatment and using nature to help you relax,” said Julie Stevens, Disney Family Cancer Center’s first patient. “When I was treated at the hospital, I would ignore the scary room. I would close my eyes and put my mind in another place,” she said. “I don’t have to do that here. They take me to that place.” The center will help between 2500 and 3000 patients annually to feel this way once the equipment is fully operational.

In addition to creating a one-of-a-kind personalized patient experience, the center benefits from the improved workflow between clinicians, patients and administration. With this system, patients are granted more freedom to wander throughout the Disney Family Cancer Center than in other places. When needed for appointments, patients can be easily located with the AeroScout MobileView platform. Doctors at the center also have the opportunity to greet their patientsimmediately upon arrival for treatment since patient names are sent to their VOIP phones. Further, the center has maximized its return on investment by planning for future upgrades, incorporating new technology as it becomes available.

At their 8th Annual RFID Journal LIVE conference, RFID Journal named the Disney Family Cancer Center the winner of The Most Innovative Use of RFID award. This award recognized Disney Family Cancer Center for:
